Claude Code in Russia: no VPN, pay in rubles
Evrona is an AI model gateway with one API key and a prepaid balance. Claude Code connects to it directly: the gateway speaks the native Anthropic protocol (POST /v1/messages), so you need no proxy and no third-party extension.
The gateway is reachable from Russia without a VPN. You top up the balance in rubles with a top-up code, no foreign card required, and each request is charged by the tokens it actually used — every charge shows up in your dashboard history.
The same key is not limited to Claude models: Claude Code works with any chat model in the catalog. Put its Model ID into the ANTHROPIC_MODEL variable.
Claude Code uses the native Anthropic protocol — POST /v1/messages — and the gateway reads the key from either the Authorization: Bearer header or x-api-key. The Evrona gateway serves this endpoint itself: five environment variables or one settings file are enough.
Connection steps
Set up ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN (the key is created in the dashboard and shown only once), ANTHROPIC_MODEL, ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL and ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL — in your terminal or in the Claude Code settings file.
So that you do not set the variables up again in every new terminal window, move them into the env block of the settings file ~/.claude/settings.json (on Windows that is C:\Users\Your name\.claude\settings.json) — the ready-made file sits in the snippet below. The Claude Code extension for VS Code reads that same file: it starts the same CLI and never sees variables from a neighbouring terminal, so restart the editor once you have edited it. Settings for a single project belong in .claude/settings.local.json in its root — that file never reaches git, so the key will not travel to the repository.
Put the gateway address without /v1 into ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL — Claude Code appends /v1/messages itself, and a stray /v1 ends up as a 404.
Fill ANTHROPIC_MODEL, ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL and ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL with our own Model IDs from the catalog. All three are needed: an Anthropic model name is unknown to the gateway, and on background tasks it answers 404, even though the main conversation keeps working. ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL is the current name of the background-model variable in Claude Code, ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL is the former one (it usually still works); both are set so that nothing depends on your version.
Launch claude — agentic mode, reading and editing files all work: the gateway supports tool calls. Streaming of answers works too.

claudecount_tokens returns an estimate of the token count, not an exact figure — lean on it, but do not cut your budget close to it; images are part of that estimate too. Image input works: an image block with a base64 source (PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 5 MB each, up to 50 per request) reaches the model, including an image returned by a tool — Claude Code reads an image file, and the model receives it as a separate user turn. A URL in place of base64 (a source of type url) is not fetched, and a model without the "Understands images" mark returns unsupported_capability. The endpoint turns down document blocks and the top_k parameter with a clear error, so attached files will not work in Claude Code. The thinking field and thinking blocks, by contrast, are accepted and go no further: no extended thinking appears in the answer, and no error either — the MAX_THINKING_TOKENS variable is not needed. The whole prompt is capped at 400,000 characters (roughly 100k tokens), and some models add a context ceiling on top of that: crossing either limit gives you an explicit error rather than a silent cut; image bytes do not count towards the character cap. There is no ceiling of our own on max_tokens — Claude Code sets 32,000, and exactly that much is held on your balance for the answer, so keep a reserve. The cache_control field is accepted but not acted on: manual cache markup is not supported. Caching itself still works automatically for models that list a cached-input rate in the catalog: when a prompt repeats the beginning of the previous one, those tokens go at the discounted rate, and their count arrives in usage.cache_read_input_tokens. This page's general rule that no parameter is lost in silence is said about the OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions; here the request body is assembled from a whitelist of Anthropic fields, and whatever misses the list is exactly what goes silently — cache_control above, for instance. Only unfamiliar fields go quietly: document blocks and the top_k parameter come back as an error with code unsupported_parameter instead of vanishing from the request.
Function calling is supported, so agentic modes work. Strict JSON mode (response_format) and the retired functions format are turned down with an unsupported_parameter error — no parameter is lost in silence. Image input is taken by models marked "Understands images" in the catalog: a content part of type image_url with a data:image/png;base64,… URL (PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 5 MB each, up to 50 per request). Remote URLs are not fetched, and a model without that mark returns unsupported_capability — both errors name the reason outright.

Claude Code FAQ
Do I need a VPN to use Claude Code through Evrona?
No. Claude Code talks to the Evrona gateway, and the gateway is reachable from Russia without a VPN. Set the gateway address in ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and your Evrona key in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN.
How do I pay for Claude Code in rubles?
With Evrona you pay for requests from a prepaid balance. The balance is topped up in rubles with a top-up code: buy the code in the store and redeem it in the dashboard, no foreign card needed.
Which models can I use in Claude Code?
Any chat model in the Evrona catalog: the gateway accepts Claude Code requests over the Anthropic protocol and hands them to the model you choose. The main model goes into ANTHROPIC_MODEL, the background one into ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL and ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL.
How much does Claude Code cost through Evrona?
There is no subscription fee: you are charged for the tokens actually used, at catalog prices. Every request cost shows up in your dashboard history, and the calculator on the site gives a monthly estimate.
Does the Claude Code extension for VS Code work?
Yes, as long as the variables live in ~/.claude/settings.json: the extension starts the CLI with its own environment and does not see variables from your terminal. A ready-made file is in the guide above.
